Rolled Newspaper Tube Sculpture
I love sculpture but it can be expensive, inconvenient and a risky venture in the elementary school setting. This is a fun, cheap, non-hazardous way to make 3 dimensional art in the classroom. I usually tie into the school's units on geometry and we discuss geometric shapes/form. The students learn how to roll and tape tight tubes and how to connect them together to create some basic forms. After a discussion about thinking like an engineer ( the finished project should be able to stand on it's own and not fall apart or droop) they are free to build. They can work alone or in teams. It doesn't take long for them to start making their own creations. It's amazing to see what they come up with!
