Picasso and Matisse

Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse were two of the finest artists of the 20th Century.  They became friends and rivals who pushed each other to become even better artists.  Both artists adopted many different styles throughout their careers.  For this project the class compared the art of both artists and then created portraits influenced by a specific style of either Picasso or Matisse.

Matisse worked with a group of artists called the "Fauves"  which means wild beasts.  He enjoyed painting with bold, bright, "wild" colors.  When painting portraits he sometimes used unusual colors for his skin tones and filled his backgrounds  with intricate patterns.

Although Picasso was associated with many art movements he is most often linked with Cubism, a style he helped develop.  In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form.
