Dot Paintings

Picture

The students were introduced to the dotted dream paintings created by the aborigines of Australia.  We talked about the materials and techniques that the artists used and discussed the  symbolism present in their artwork.

With the younger students the focus was on symbolism.  We discussed the meanings of some common aboriginal symbols and then they used them to create their own stories. The older students practiced drawing animals and insects and then used one for their final project which focused on the dotting technique.  As they began painting I encouraged them to be aware of the patterns they were creating with their use of line and color.
