Geometric Paper Collage

This lesson was part of a unit on shape.  The students were given pre-cut circles, squares and rectangles.  The shapes were either primary colors which reinforced a previous unit on color or black, white and greys with a focus on value and contrast.  The students were encouraged to use their imaginations to create works of art using only these three shapes

The students were encouraged to experiment and try different combinations before gluing anything down.  The younger students used only pre-cut shapes.  The older students were allowed to use scissors
to cut circles, squares and triangles of differing sizes.

I encourage the students to think abstractly and focus on pattern and design.  While some students embrace the concept of abstract design others need to create something more realistic.
Learning concepts: color, line, shape, pattern, value,
                                           overlap, contrast, abstraction
